House of Nehesi Publishers

The first time I came to St. Maarten, I had been working in a bookstore and so while I was planning my voyage, I tried to find books about the island. I found a travel guide, a snorkeling guide and discovered that Speed 2 had been filmed here and went to see it (in the theater, mind you!) to try to gain some small tidbit of information that was individual to the island. If you've seen Speed 2 you will know that I got nothing out of that experience. The books were little more help. Why do travel guides make unusual places seem generic?

Anyway, the long lead up is just a way of saying that I find House of Nehesi Publishers pretty exciting.

From their website:
First-time writers and well-known authors from St. Martin and from throughout the Caribbean and the USA have been published successfully by the House of Nehesi Publishers imprint. Lasana M. Sekou, Drisana Deborah Jack, Louis Duzanson, Joseph H. Lake, Jr., Dr. Jay Haviser, Jennie N. Wheatley, and Cynthia Wilson are among our well-known national and regional authors. George Lamming, Kamau Brathwaite, Amiri Baraka, and Shake Keane are world-famous authors published by House of Nehesi Publishers.

Their books can be purchased direct from the website, at amazon.com, or at various shops such as The Shipwreck Shops or Van Dorp.
