I have strolled starry-eyed through this place too may times to count. If you are furnishing a place on this island it is a spot to check if you like teak furniture.

Does Arthur still own this place ? He wanted to sale Dan a whole container of furniture to resale it in the States. Their furniture were great and the price they were paying for them in Indonesia was so so little...
Should I say that ? I don't know, feel free to edit!
Hey Sissi! I don't think so, I think they left in 2003.
I'm not going to worry about protecting teak pricing, I figure this is an information site right? That's valid information.
They have some competition now from people who started doing the same thing, going out a buying a container worth of furniture and selling off stuff they didn't want.
Nowadays it is not necessarily nice to buy new teak furniture, I think it is becoming too heavily logged.
Oh, OK ! Then I can gossip ! No I won't say too much! Now ask me again after few glasses of Pinot Noir...
I totally agree with you, in the late 90's teak was kind of "in", and only a few stores were carrying teak furniture. Nowadays, it seems to me that everybody have the same teak furniture inside their home and lots of people are importing container from Indonesia, I mean when you know it costs about $15,000 a container (big enough to open and stock a medium size store) and you resale it for 8 to 16 times the price , the profit margin is quite big ( not counting how low they are paying the worker)
This was in 1999, I think now it is more expensive to buy over there and there are some restrictions regarding the preservation of the forest. They are not allowed to cut as many or they have to replant right away, I am not sure, I read something about it few years ago and I felt ashamed about us , westerners, destroying their forest for furniture that look "pretty" in our home.
I do remember seeing some prices from places in Vietnam, not for teak but for hardwood furniture and for really artful pieces, like furniture with beautiful inlay. I was amazed at the low prices. As a personal thing it is tempting,l but I think it can be a form of exploitation. Exploiting another countries natural resources is not a good way to foster world community feeling.
I have also found that I am terrible at taking care of nice things so... easier to resist temptation!~
